While the championship race is now mathematically settled, Watanga will officially be crowned champions on Saturday when they face Heaven Eleven in their final league match of the season.

The result takes Watanga to 55 points, a tally that neither second-placed Bea Mountain FC nor any other challenger can surpass with just one fixture remaining, sealing a historic league triumph for the club.

Watanga secured the title in convincing fashion at the SKD practice pitch , where Margibi County youth winger Choice Howard opened the scoring in the first half. Darius Garmondeh, popularly known as the “Masked Man,” doubled the advantage early in the second half before Varney B. Varney added a third late on to complete a commanding performance.

Gardnerville FC managed a consolation goal, but Watanga remained in control throughout the encounter as they confirmed their status as champions-elect.

Coach Geekor delivers in debut season

The title marks a remarkable achievement for head coach Theophilus Geekor, who has guided Watanga FC to their third first major league crown in his debut season at the helm.

Reacting after securing the title, Geekor acknowledged the challenges faced during the campaign, including player departures, but praised the resilience of his squad.

“Watanga FC have won the league in my first season. This is a wake-up call going forward. There were challenges especially where several of our key players left us,” Geekor said.

He also expressed excitement about leading the club into continental football, with Watanga set to represent Liberia in the CAF Champions League.

“Playing in the CAF Champions League will be a dream come true standing on the touchline in the biggest tournament on the continent,” he added.

Bea Mountain win not enough

Second-placed Bea Mountain FC kept their mathematical hopes alive briefly with a 4-0 win over Borough FC in Buchanan, but the result ultimately proved irrelevant in the title race.

The match at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium was disrupted by heavy rain in the second half and also saw Borough FC captain Lawrence Wilson sent off after a straight red card, with the score at 2-0 before Bea Mountain eventually completed the win.

Despite their victory, Bea Mountain remain unable to catch Watanga on the standings.

LISCR FC stunned

Elsewhere, LISCR FC suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Discoveries SA at the TUSA Field, highlighting the unpredictability of the closing fixtures in the league.

With the title now decided, attention shifts to Saturday’s final round of matches, where Watanga FC will be formally crowned champions in front of their supporters as they complete a landmark season in Liberian football.

For Watanga, the achievement marks a defining moment a league title secured through consistency, discipline, and a strong debut campaign under Coach Geekor.
