Ethics and Editorial Standards

FrontPage Africa is an independent Liberian news organisation. Our readers trust us to tell them the truth about the people and institutions that shape their lives. These are the standards every journalist and editor at FrontPage Africa works by.

Independence

FrontPage Africa is editorially independent. No government, political party, business or advertiser decides what we report or how we report it. Our journalism is funded by our publications and advertising, and advertisers have no say over our news coverage.

  • Our journalists do not accept payment, gifts or favours in exchange for coverage, and do not take money to publish, change or withhold a story.
  • Staff must tell their editor about any personal, financial or political interest connected to a story they are working on, and step away from that story where needed.
  • Advertising and sponsored content are clearly labelled and kept separate from our news reporting.

Accuracy and fairness

  • We verify facts before we publish, and we name our sources wherever we can.
  • People and organisations facing serious allegations in our reporting are given a fair chance to respond before publication, and their response is included.
  • We distinguish clearly between news reporting, analysis and opinion. Editorials and opinion pieces are labelled as such.
  • We do not alter photographs or video in ways that mislead readers.

Sources

We protect our sources. We grant anonymity only when a source faces a real risk of harm or retaliation and the information is important to the public and cannot be obtained otherwise. When we do, the editor knows who the source is, and we tell readers why the source was not named.

Harm and privacy

We take care when reporting on children, victims of sexual and gender-based violence, and other vulnerable people. We do not identify survivors of sexual violence or children involved in crimes without strong justification and, where appropriate, consent. We respect privacy unless there is a clear public interest.

Opinion and guest essays

Opinion pieces, letters and guest essays reflect the views of their authors, not of FrontPage Africa. They are fact-checked before publication and held to the same standards of accuracy as our news reporting.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we correct it openly. See our Corrections Policy.
