Monrovia — Former President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Charles B. Coffey Jr., has called on the Government of Guinea to respect Liberia’s territorial sovereignty amid reports that Guinean authorities have crossed the river boundary that historically separates the two countries.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Coffey described the reported action as a serious national concern that must be addressed through diplomacy while firmly protecting Liberia’s territorial integrity.
“Liberia is a sovereign republic with clearly recognized international borders,” Mr. Coffey stated.
“For generations, the river has served as the natural boundary between Liberia and Guinea, and any crossing of that boundary in a manner that suggests encroachment is unacceptable.”
Mr. Coffey emphasized that while Liberia remains committed to peaceful relations with its neighbors, the country must remain resolute in defending its territorial rights.
“As a nation that has fought to preserve its sovereignty and independence for nearly two centuries, Liberia cannot and must not allow any action that undermines its territorial integrity,” he said.
“Respect for international boundaries is a fundamental principle of peaceful coexistence among nations.”
The former PUL President urged Liberian authorities to address the situation through diplomatic engagement while ensuring that the country’s borders are protected.
“Liberia believes in diplomacy, dialogue, and regional cooperation,” Mr. Coffey noted.
“However, diplomacy must be grounded in mutual respect. Our neighbors must respect the internationally recognized boundary that separates our two countries.”
Mr. Coffey also called on Liberians to remain calm and united while the matter is addressed.
“At times like these, national unity is essential. Liberians must remain peaceful but vigilant, knowing that our sovereignty and territorial dignity are matters that concern every citizen of this Republic,” he said.
He concluded by urging both governments to resolve the matter in the spirit of African solidarity and regional peace, while reaffirming that Liberia’s borders must always be respected.
“Liberia stands for peace, but peace must never come at the expense of our national sovereignty,” Mr. Coffey added.
