Liberia: FC Fassell Accuse Former Coach of Contract Breach After Sudden Resignation

The club said it had fully honored all terms of the coach’s three-year contract, which was signed in April 2024.

MONROVIA – Liberian champions FC Fassell have accused their former head coach, Belgian national Ivan Jacky Minnaert, of breaching his contract following his abrupt resignation and subsequent appointment by Ugandan Premier League side Vipers SC.

Coach Minnaert tendered his resignation on July 14 via WhatsApp, citing “personal reasons” for his departure. However, just days later, Vipers SC officially unveiled him as their new head coach.

In response, FC Fassell released a strongly worded statement on Friday, July 18, expressing what it called “deep disappointment” over the manner of Minnaert’s exit. The club said it had fully honored all terms of the coach’s three-year contract, which was signed in April 2024.

“Such conduct undermines the laws of contract, football regulations, best practice, and the principles of professionalism that FC Fassell stand for,” the club stated.

The club further noted that it had alerted relevant football authorities and is considering disciplinary actions should the matter not be resolved amicably.

Despite the club’s accusations, Coach Minnaert issued a resignation message on July 15, offering a reflective and emotional farewell to the team, management, and supporters.

“Dear President Mr. Cassell, Dear Players, Dear Fans of FC Fassell… I want to express my deepest gratitude to every one of you for the unforgettable experience we’ve shared,” Minnaert wrote.

In his message, the Belgian coach praised club president Cassell Kouh for his leadership and support, thanked the players for their “dedication, resilience, and professionalism,” and acknowledged the fans who, he said, “made me feel part of this incredible family from day one.”

“Though I step away for personal reasons, this is not goodbye to the memories or the respect I carry with me,” he added. “I will always remain one of your greatest supporters.”

However, FC Fassell leadership questioned the sincerity of the coach’s explanation, noting the rapid transition to his new role at Vipers SC. The club suggested that the move contradicted the “personal reasons” cited in his resignation.

Minnaert’s sudden departure leaves FC Fassell in a challenging position just weeks before the start of the new domestic football season. The club had been investing heavily in player development and regional competitiveness under the coach’s guidance.

The dispute is likely to reignite debates around coach mobility, contract enforcement, and professional standards in African club football.

FC Fassell have not ruled out taking the matter further and may seek redress through continental or global football governing bodies such as CAF or FIFA.
