The Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS) today officially welcomed 33 newly admitted resident doctors during a one-day orientation program marking the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The orientation, held at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK) Lobby in Monrovia, brought together officials of the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons, faculty chairs, representatives of the JFK Medical Center administration, and the incoming resident doctors.
The orientation was designed to prepare the new residents for the rigorous postgraduate medical training program by introducing them to the College’s mission, vision, and mandate. Participants also received an overview of the residency training structure, academic and professional expectations, assessment and examination requirements, residents’ rights and responsibilities, institutional policies, and the support systems available throughout their training.
The program further encouraged collaboration, teamwork, and professional networking among the new residents as they begin their journey toward becoming specialist physicians.
Delivering the welcome remarks, the Assistant Secretary-General of LCPS congratulated the new residents on their successful admission and encouraged them to approach their training with discipline, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence in patient care.
Providing an overview of the College, LCPS Secretary-General Dr. Philderald Pratt highlighted the history and steady growth of the residency training program since its establishment. He underscored the College’s significant contribution to strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system through the training of highly skilled medical specialists.
Dr. Pratt noted that the College has graduated 155 medical specialists, many of whom are now serving in hospitals and health institutions across Liberia and beyond. He also highlighted the expansion of residency training across multiple medical specialties and the College’s continued commitment to academic excellence and quality clinical training.
“Our graduates are transforming healthcare delivery and strengthening the nation’s health system,” Dr. Pratt emphasized.
Faculty Chairs and representatives of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center also addressed the incoming residents, encouraging them to embrace the values of professionalism, lifelong learning, ethical practice, and compassionate patient care throughout their residency.
The Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons currently has 85 resident doctors enrolled across ten specialty programs: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Community Health, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, and Radiology.
The orientation officially marked the beginning of the residents’ specialist training, reinforcing LCPS’s mission of producing competent physicians who will continue to improve healthcare delivery and advance medical education in Liberia.
