Monrovia – The Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CEMESP) has received a grant of twenty thousand Euros (€20,000) from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement a new project titled “Enhancing Press Freedom, Women’s Digital Rights, and Accountability Governance in Liberia.”
The agreement was signed in late August 2025 between CEMESP’s Executive Director, Mr. Malcolm W. Joseph, and His Excellency Jeroen Verheul, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Ghana.
Through this project, CEMESP will carry out a range of activities aimed at strengthening democracy and protecting rights, including training 50 female journalists and civil society activists on digital literacy, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, training 60 accountability champions from youth groups and the media in fact-checking and responsible use of AI, and convening a Women’s Digital Rights Policy Forum in Monrovia to engage stakeholders on online safety, privacy, and reforms to Liberia’s digital rights laws.
The project officially kicked off with a two-day Digital Rights Training for Women Journalists and Activists held on September 19–20, 2025, in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. Participants were equipped with essential skills to navigate the digital space safely while advancing press freedom and women’s rights.
Speaking on the initiative, CEMESP’s Executive Director, Malcolm Joseph, praised the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its partnership:
“This collaboration marks a major milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen press freedom, safeguard women’s digital rights, and promote accountability governance in Liberia. By empowering journalists, civil society, and young accountability champions, we are building a more resilient democratic society where citizens’ voices are protected both offline and online.”
CEMESP reaffirmed its commitment to advancing freedom of expression, media development, and good governance in Liberia.
