Monrovia – The Police Forensic Unit Department is investigating an alleged burglary on the Office of House of Representatives Speaker Emmanuel Nuquay.
The incident occurred over the weekend.
According to Mr. Edward Kennedy, Chief of Office Staff of the Speaker, individuals yet to be identified, entered the Speaker’s Office and made away with the only TV and decoder and some unnamed items yet to be disclosed.
“The doors were not broken into so far from what we have observed.”
“There are two scenarios to this incident: one is that someone with the keys went in and another is that either the person entered by way of the annex under construction.”
“But the police is still investigating,” Mr. Edward Kennedy, Chief of Office Staff of the Speaker’s Office.
Kennedy told this newspaper that the Speaker has only being informed via text message.
Mr. Nuquay is the running mate to Vice President Joseph Boakai on the ticket of the ruling Unity Party. He is from the People’s Unification Party (PUP).
This is the first public attempt on the Office of the Speaker, but there have been attempts of burglary on the Offices of individual lawmakers.
The building is being protected by officers of the Liberian National Police and its own private security.
The Capitol witnessed similar burglary in 2015.
The office of Representative Moses Kollie, than Chairman on Ways, Means and Finance and also the office of Representative Jeremiah Koung were also reportedly burglarized.
The issue of security protection has become a major challenge for many staffs and visitors.
Security protecting the building in 2014 arrested a man attempting to break into a parked vehicle.
According to investigation, the man was attempting to allegedly steal the vehicle but for the vigilance of security guards on duty.
Burglary incidents are nothing strange to some staffs that have long experience at working at the Capitol.
Similar incident occurred as far back in 2001 when unidentified thieves burglarized the Office of the then Liberian Vice President Moses Blah and made away with several valuables.
The reports said items stolen included a satellite receiver, photocopier, television set, video deck and assorted office materials.
When contacted, the Police spokesperson, Mr. Sam Collins, said they were investigating the alleged burglary.
