Monrovia—The family of Samuel P. Jackson has called for calm, due process, and responsible public discourse following his release from custody by the Liberia National Police (LNP) amid an ongoing investigation into the death of his wife, Toni Khumalo.

Mr. Jackson was detained for questioning in connection with the case but was released after authorities did not file formal charges within the 48-hour period required under Liberian law. Police confirmed that the investigation remains active, with further actions dependent on findings yet to be disclosed.
The case stems from the death of Toni Khumalo, also known as Ntombikayise Innocentia Khumalo, on March 12 in Monrovia. Her death prompted a police inquiry to determine the cause and assess whether foul play was involved. Although an autopsy has been conducted, the LNP has not yet released its results or confirmed an official cause of death.
In a statement issued on March 17, 2026, and signed by Abenego C. Kofie on behalf of the Jackson family across Liberia, Ghana, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the family extended condolences to Khumalo’s relatives, including her mother and extended family, describing her passing as a “deeply tragic loss.”
The family also expressed support for Samuel Jackson, noting that he continues to cooperate fully with investigators.
“We urge the public to allow the investigative process to proceed without interference, speculation, or the spread of unverified information,” the statement said, while commending the police for their professionalism.
Addressing widespread rumors, the family denied claims that any life insurance policy existed naming Jackson as a beneficiary. They further clarified that the couple shared joint business interests across Liberia, South Africa, and the United States, emphasizing that this information was provided to counter speculation about possible financial motives.
The statement also referenced Khumalo’s history of health challenges, citing incidents between 2023 and early 2026, including falls, medical emergencies, and a reported in-flight seizure that required urgent care.
According to the family, this context was not intended to diminish her dignity but to address public narratives surrounding her death.
In addition, Samuel Jackson issued an apology for remarks made shortly after his wife’s passing, attributing them to grief and emotional distress.
The family raised concern over what it described as misinformation and harmful commentary circulating on social media, urging both the public and media institutions to act responsibly and verify information before publication.
“The Jackson Family will continue to cooperate with authorities and will provide further updates when appropriate,” the Jackson’s family promised.
Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police has assured the public that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and impartially.
