Abuja, Nigeria – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has met separately with the Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament Moustapha Cisse Lo and President of the Community Court of ECOWAS, Justice Jerome Traore in Abuja during day two of her official working visit to the ECOWAS Commission.
According to a dispatch from Abuja, Nigeria the Liberian leader earlier paid a courtesy call on Speaker Cisse Lo at the ECOWAS parliament where he briefed her on work in progress at the regional parliamentary establishment.
Speaker Cisse Lo enjoined President Sirleaf to intervene in ensuring the inclusion of parliament in the activities of the Commission rather than its existing advisory role.
Responding, President Sirleaf assured the Speaker of ECOWAS parliament that she had noted concerns expressed and would initiate the necessary consultations in order to inform a collective decision on the matter.
She said it is imperative for all sides to work together with a view to achieving the desired results that will bring benefits to the vast majority of our people.
Later, the ECOWAS Authority Chairperson was taken on a guided tour of the newly equipped Chamber of the ECOEWAS parliament. She was then presented a gift of appreciation for her historic visit as the first ever Chairperson in the 41 years lifespan of the Community that has gone beyond the call of duty – to get on the ground in order to gain firsthand information on the obtaining situation amid progress and challenges.
Meanwhile, President Sirleaf who also visited the Community Court of ECOWAS thanked President Jerome Traore and team and called on them to impartially adjudicate and dispense justice in light of the competing demands from citizens of Member States seeking justice. She said the onus is on the Court to aspire for the highest standards befitting fairness in ensuring that justice is seen to be done.
Earlier, Justice Jerome Traore appealed to the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority on the need for adequate office for ease of work that will lead to efficiency in the work of the Court.
