MONROVIA – The Mano River Union (MRU) has commended the government and people of Liberia for the peaceful atmosphere under which the June 7 protest led by the Council of Patriots was conducted.
According to the sub-regional body, the last few weeks have been a testing period for the Weah-led administration.
“We believe that las few weeks may have been amongst the most trying and test times since the elections which ushered in the government of the Coalition of Democratic Change 18 months ago,” statement said.
June 7th SavetheState protest, organized by the Council of Patriots (COP), where protesters crowded the grounds of Capitol Hill in Monrovia, amid concerns of corruption, abuse of the laws, poor economy, bad governance, amongst others.
Protestors went without any reported casualty as tens of thousands of Liberians paraded the main route of Capitol Hill.
Meanwhile, the Mano River Union has called on stakeholders to put national interest above political interest to ensure economic stability and development for the country.
“MRU calls on all stakeholders to put Liberia above every parochial and political interest and work together to preserve the peace and stability of the country.”
“All must ensure stability for economic activities and development to take place and be sustained,” statement said.
MRU stated that it will continue to encourage the government to uphold genuine concerns in the Constitution in fostering democracy and strengthening the governance system of Liberia.
“MRU has over the months been seized of development in Liberia and endeavored to engage all regional and sub-regional actors to continue to keep the focus on maintaining that country’s fragile peace,” the regional body noted in a statement.
“We will continue to encourage the government of HE President George Manneh Weah to remain resolute in upholding the constitution, nurturing democracy and strengthening governance institution in this regard,” statement said.
