GBARNGA, Bong County — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has sparked fresh discussion about the political influence of Bong County Senator Prince Kermue Moye after publicly referring to him as the county’s “Political Godfather.”
Vice President Koung made the remark Saturday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Far East Community Women Center in Gbarnga, where scores of women and community residents gathered to witness the launch of the facility.
During his remarks, the Vice President turned his attention to Senator Moye and declared: “I want to recognize Senator Prince Moye, the political Godfather of Bong County.”
The statement immediately generated excitement among women attending the program, with several applauding and expressing satisfaction over the Vice President’s public acknowledgment of Senator Moye’s political stature.
For some of the women, Vice President Koung’s description amounted to a significant endorsement of a politician they believe has established a strong connection with communities throughout the county.
One woman said the Vice President’s recognition was particularly important because it came from a senior member of the national government.
“We were very happy when the Vice President made that statement,” she said. “It shows that the work and influence of Senator Moye are being recognized beyond his immediate supporters. When someone of the Vice President’s position calls him the political Godfather, people will naturally pay attention.”
Another woman, Hajah Swaray, said the declaration reflected what she described as Moye’s longstanding political relevance in Bong County. “For us, this was not an ordinary statement,” she said. “Senator Moye has built relationships with people, and his name is known in communities across Bong. We appreciate Vice President Koung for recognizing his place in the political affairs of this county.”
Fanta Kromah, anotyher woman, linked the Vice President’s comments to the senator’s engagement with ordinary residents, particularly women and community groups.
“We welcomed the Vice President’s words because Senator Moye has continued to interact with the people,” she said. “Women want leaders who listen to them and understand their challenges. Hearing him recognized in such a manner made many of us proud.”
Another attendee said the reaction from the women demonstrated how strongly the senator’s supporters identify with his political leadership.
“You could see the excitement when the Vice President called Senator Moye the political Godfather,” she said. “The women applauded because they felt that someone at the national level had acknowledged what they have seen in Bong County. It was a moment of recognition for Senator Moye.”
Kula Bility said the title should not merely be celebrated as a political compliment but should also inspire greater responsibility from the senator.
“We appreciate Vice President Koung for recognizing Senator Moye, but recognition also comes with responsibility,” she said. “If he is being described as the political Godfather of Bong County, we expect him to continue standing with the people and supporting programs that benefit women, young people and communities.”
The groundbreaking ceremony itself was centered on the establishment of the Far East Community Women Center, an initiative expected to provide women in the community with a dedicated venue for meetings, organization and other activities.
The gathering consequently brought together community members and women leaders around an initiative focused on strengthening community participation and providing a space for women.
However, Vice President Koung’s unexpected political characterization of Senator Moye became a major talking point during and after the ceremony.
The phrase “Political Godfather of Bong County” quickly drew attention because of the weight attached to the description in Liberia’s political environment, where such titles are often associated with influence, networks and the ability to mobilize political support.
Vice President Koung did not elaborate extensively on the basis for the characterization during his remarks, but his public recognition of Moye placed the senator at the center of political discussion surrounding the event.
The women who reacted to the statement said they interpreted it as an acknowledgment of Moye’s influence and his relationship with constituents and community stakeholders.
They also expressed appreciation for the Vice President’s decision to make the recognition publicly rather than privately, saying the declaration gave greater visibility to what they consider Moye’s political contribution to Bong County.
Beyond the political symbolism, the event remained focused on the proposed women’s center, with participants emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities and spaces where women can organize and participate in community development.
For the women present, however, Saturday’s ceremony produced a second significant message: the public elevation of Senator Moye’s political profile by one of Liberia’s highest-ranking government officials.
Koung’s description has now added a new phrase to the political conversation surrounding Moye, as supporters and community members weigh the significance of being publicly identified as the “Political Godfather of Bong County.”
