Liberia: Senator Nya Twayen Jr. Accuses Past Government of Looting, Announces Job Opportunities for Youth and Women

Sanniquellie, Nimba County – Senator Nya D. Twayen Jr. has accused the previous government, led by former President George Weah, of looting the country’s resources. Speaking during a tour in Nimba County, the Unity Party (UP) senator assured citizens that 2025 would mark a significant year for development, as the ruling party plans to implement projects across Liberia’s counties and villages.

Senator Twayen, often referred to as the “Operation Senator” in vote-rich Nimba County, urged residents to lower their expectations for 2024, cautioning that major development initiatives would not commence until 2025. He blamed the financial challenges faced by the current Unity Party administration on the alleged mismanagement and looting of resources by the previous government of President Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

“The past administration looted the country’s resources, creating a financial strain for the Unity Party government,” Twayen said. “As a result, Nimbaians and Liberians should not expect much development in 2024, but instead look forward to 2025, when President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung will spearhead development projects.”

Senator Twayen pledged his continued support for youth development and women’s empowerment in Nimba County’s 19 administrative districts. He announced plans to provide loans to rural women and market traders to enhance their productivity.

“I started this women’s empowerment initiative through my foundation, which supports rural women to become self-sufficient instead of depending on the national government,” he said.

Twayen also used the occasion to express gratitude to Nimbaians for their support, stating that his county tour was aimed at strengthening relationships with constituents. He promised that local communities would be involved in any social agreements the government makes with ArcelorMittal Liberia in Yekepa, Nimba County.

Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono also spoke during the event, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities, including a lack of funding, bad road networks, and poor living conditions. She called on Senator Twayen and other lawmakers to intervene and address these pressing issues.

Chief Moses W. Vah, speaking on behalf of Nimba County’s Chiefs and Elders Council, welcomed Senator Twayen and raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the county’s administrative office. He urged the senator to engage relevant authorities to address these issues.

In response, Senator Twayen pledged to take up the community’s concerns with the appropriate government officials and work towards finding solutions.
