Liberia: Refuge Place International Concludes Medical Outreach in Bong County

VELAYAN, Bong County – Refuge Place International (RPI) has concluded a one-day medical outreach in Velayan Town, Salala District, Bong County, providing a range of essential health services including maternal and child care, eye screening, and general consultations.
Speaking at the outreach, RPI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mosoka Fallah said the initiative is part of the organization’s corporate social responsibility to the people of Velayan. Dr. Fallah reaffirmed his commitment to working with the community to improve healthcare delivery and provide other basic social services.
Residents of Velayan have lauded RPI for constructing a modern clinic in their town, describing it as a significant step toward addressing the long-standing healthcare challenges they face.

According to residents, the facility has brought immense relief by providing easy access to medical services, particularly for women and children. They recounted how, prior to the clinic’s construction, many lives—especially those of pregnant women and children—were lost while traveling to distant health centers in Totota.

They emphasized that the RPI clinic is currently the only health facility serving that part of Bong County and appealed to the organization to expand its efforts by building more clinics to save lives in other underserved communities.

Similarly, residents of Nyema and Low-Cost Villages in Bentol, Montserrado County, commended RPI for extending essential healthcare services to their areas. They noted that the presence of RPI clinics has greatly improved access to healthcare for more than 80 surrounding towns and villages.

RPI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on reducing maternal mortality in rural Liberia. Dr. Fallah disclosed that the organization has already constructed four clinics across the country, with plans underway to build more in other regions.
Meanwhile, the District Commissioner of Kono-Wolo Administrative District, Stephen Binda, highlighted key challenges facing the area, including poor road connectivity, inadequate educational facilities, and limited access to healthcare. Commissioner Binda noted that the few schools in the district suffer from a shortage of teachers, which hampers the quality of education. He called on county authorities to intervene and address the issues for the benefit of local residents.
Commissioner Binda also praised Refuge Place International for the construction of the modern health facility in Velayan and encouraged other stakeholders to follow suit.

Also speaking at the official opening of the clinic over the weekend, Bong County District #6 Representative Moimah Briggs Mensah urged citizens of Velayan to take ownership of the clinic and prioritize modern healthcare over harmful traditional practices. She pledged her support to RPI in sustaining quality healthcare delivery in the district and called on the county leadership to prioritize the pressing needs of citizens to promote meaningful development.
