Monrovia — Women from across Liberia gathered in Monrovia in an atmosphere filled with excitement and solidarity to celebrate their achievements and reaffirm their commitment to advancing women’s rights and equality.

Among the organizations participating in the official International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration was Plan International Liberia, led by its Country Director, Miriam Murray, along with members of the organization’s Women Forum.
The national program was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with partners and brought together women’s groups, civil society organizations, development partners and other stakeholders to recognize the contributions of women and promote gender equality.
Celebrated globally on March 8 each year, International Women’s Day highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while raising awareness about challenges that continue to affect women and girls.
These include child early and forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), gender-based violence (GBV), rape, and sexual harassment.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Give to Gain; Support Women for National Development.”
The event featured cultural performances, keynote reflections, and recognition of outstanding Liberian women for their contributions to national development.
During the program, Plan International Liberia also showcased its inclusive initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls, including those with disabilities, through the Liberia Women’s Empowerment Project (LWEP).
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gbeme Kollie Horace, emphasized that International Women’s Day serves as an important platform to celebrate the resilience of women while accelerating efforts toward gender equality.
She noted that the government remains committed to addressing gender-based violence, promoting women’s economic empowerment, strengthening social protection systems, and improving access to education for girls across the country.
Meanwhile, the Plan International Liberia Women Forum is expected to organize additional activities next week as part of its continued observance of International Women’s Day.
