Monrovia – The National Commission on Disabilities (NCD) has successfully intervened in a situation involving members of the visually impaired community and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, resulting in the peaceful resolution of tensions and the reunification of twelve children with their parents.
The situation arose on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following the Ministry’s enforcement action to remove children who were accompanying their parents to beg on the streets. The action forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing implementation of the Save the Future Project, launched in 2024 to remove children under the age of 18 from street situations and ensure their protection and access to improved opportunities.
Upon learning of the incident, the NCD immediately engaged officials of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Liberia National Police, and representatives of the affected community. Discussions held late Thursday evening over several hours helped de-escalate tensions, promote dialogue, and restore calm, leading to a mutually acceptable understanding in the best interest of both the children and their parents.
The NCD, accompanied by three representatives of the aggrieved parents of the children held a round table dialogue meeting on Friday, February 20, 2026 with officials of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection Conference Room where, NCD Executive Director, Apostle Dr. J. Aaron Wright Sr., commended the Ministry’s efforts to safeguard the welfare and future of Liberian children and emphasized the importance of strengthening cordial working relationships and institutional collaboration. He also encouraged members of the visually impaired, and other persons with disabilities to remain peaceful and law-abiding, stressing that dialogue and cooperation remain the most effective means of addressing concerns.
The National Commission on Disabilities reaffirms its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities while working closely with other government institutions and stakeholders to advance inclusive, rights-based, and sustainable solutions nationwide.
In response, Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Frederick Cooper, expressed appreciation to the NCD Acting Executive Director for his swift intervention and leadership in ensuring a peaceful outcome. He further affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to continued collaboration with the NCD in implementing the Save the Future Project, which supports the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development of His Excellency, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.
