MONROVIA –For the first time in its history, Liberia stepped onto one of the world’s most prestigious cultural platforms, making a historic debut at the 39th Edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, India.

The ongoing occasion marks a bold and symbolic advance in the country’s cultural diplomacy and global rebranding efforts.
Leading the charge is Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador, Kekura M. Kamara, who is heading a 15-member delegation to showcase the nation’s rich artistic heritage.
In his quest and in support of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s vision to promote cultural diplomacy and positioning arts and culture as tools for national branding and economic empowerment, Ambassador Kamara, who spoke to this paper, said his vision is now materializing on an international stage.
Held annually, the Surajkund International Crafts Mela is ranked among the largest cultural gatherings in the world, attracting thousands of artisans and millions of visitors from across the globe. Countries converge to display their finest crafts, traditional music, dance, textiles, jewelry and indigenous designs.
Liberia’s presence among the many invitees signals a new chapter – providing the most needed opportunity to define itself through creativity, heritage, and cultural confidence as it has been enclosed for due to conflicts and political uncertainty.
The country’s culture envoy says the significance of this milestone cannot be overstated.
First there is global visibility, stating that the Surajkund offers exposure rarely accessible to Liberian artisans, placing designers and performers before international buyers, cultural institutions, diplomats, and global media. Visibility breeds recognition, and recognition opens doors.
Second, there are tangible economic opportunities. The creative economy is not a pastime; it is a livelihood sector.
Participation at Surajkund creates pathways to export markets, cross-cultural collaborations, international exhibitions, and long-term trade relationships. For a country seeking economic diversification, culture becomes not just expression, but enterprise.
Third, this moment represents cultural diplomacy in action. In a world shaped by perception, art often speaks louder than policy.
When Liberian drums sound across Surajkund’s vibrant grounds, Amb. Kamara indicates, they carry stories of strength and survival.
And when Liberian crafts are admired and purchased, he asserted that they reflect generations of skill, community, and tradition.
“Liberian creativity belongs on the world stage. It affirms that painters, writers, designers, musicians, and performers are not limited by geography, but connected to global possibility,” said Amb. Kamara.
Ambassador Kamara’s leadership has within no time brought further recognition to the country – that arts and culture must be integral to national development strategies.
He pointed out that it’s time for the nation to invest in cultural branding to strengthen its identity and economy.
According to him, Liberia’s debut at Surajkund is a manifestation of its readiness to join the global conversation.
“Of course, our participation is only the beginning. The lasting impact will depend on sustained engagement; building partnerships, supporting artists at home, and developing policies that nurture a thriving creative ecosystem.”
