has reported that the Authority is making steady progress through various interventions aimed at improving operations, aviation safety, infrastructure, and staff development at Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Buway said that despite the numerous challenges confronting the airport, the LAA leadership remains committed to strengthening operational efficiency through collaboration, institutional reforms and technical expertise.

“Despite the challenges before us, the Authority has continued to make practical steps to improve our operations and strengthen the security and safety of our airports,” he said.

He noted that among the Authority’s ongoing interventions are efforts to improve the airport’s firefighting and emergency response capabilities.

According to him, the LAA has procured new fire trucks to enhance its capacity to respond effectively to aircraft incidents and other emergency situations.

“These investments demonstrate our determination to strengthen emergency preparedness to protect passengers, aircraft, airport workers and critical infrastructure,” Buway stated.

The LAA acting MD further disclosed that the Authority’s leadership has continued to upgrade airport navigation systems, recognizing that reliable navigation equipment is essential to safe aircraft operations, particularly during periods of reduced visibility and adverse weather conditions.

He explained that the interventions form part of the Authority’s broader commitment to improving operational reliability and bringing airport facilities in line with modern international standards.

Buway also emphasized the importance of investing in human capacity development through specialized training and professional development opportunities for aircraft technicians, operational staff, and security personnel.

“We are working to ensure our staff have the knowledge, skills, and discipline required to manage the increasing demands of airport operations,” he added.

He stressed that infrastructure development alone cannot guarantee aviation safety without competent personnel, effective operational procedures, and a strong institutional safety culture.

He further disclosed that the LAA leadership is intensifying efforts to strengthen operational readiness, address infrastructure deficiencies, improve emergency preparedness and implement corrective measures to meet international aviation safety and security requirements.

Buway made the remarks over the weekend in Margibi County during the launch of an €8.6 million project titled “Action Enhancing Safety and Secure Air Connectivity at Roberts International Airport.”

The Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in partnership with the European Union EU and the Federal Republic of Germany, has officially launched

The €8.6 million aviation safety and infrastructure project, under the auspices of the European Union (EU) and Germany Government, is aimed at transforming operations at Roberts International Airport RIA and strengthening Liberia’s position as a regional aviation hub.

Speaking at the ceremony, he described the project as a significant investment in Liberia’s aviation sector, emphasizing its importance beyond physical infrastructure development.

“For us at the Liberia Airport Authority, this project is more than an infrastructure intervention; it is an investment in public safety, public confidence, international connectivity, and the future of Liberia,” he said.

He pledged the Authority’s commitment to working closely with development partners to ensure that the project delivers tangible, sustainable and measurable results.
