MONROVIA-Liberia CAF cup representative Watanga FC will play Stade Malien de Bamako of the Malian Premiere Division on Sunday, August 20, at the famous Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in the preliminary round of the 2023 Confederation of African Football Cup.

The Soldiers Boys will be making their second appearance in CAF competition after failing to make it to the second round of the Champions league in 2022.
They made their debut in 2022 and defeat Nigerian champions Rivers United at home 1-0 but got eliminated from the from the first after United 3-0 win the first leg.
The former Liberian champions bowed out of the competition in the preliminary round on a 3-1 aggregate loss to the Nigerian team.
One years since its appearance, Watanga FC CEO Andy Quamie said his team is hoping to reach the group stage this year.
In a press an interview with FrontPage Africa Quamie told our reporters Watanga FC is not going into the two leg just to participate but aiming higher.

Unlike last season when Watanga FC won the league and was a tough team to beat, the club has not played a completive match ahead of their international showdown.
Despite the national league in Liberia yet to kick off Quamie is confident that his team will have positive results against their counterparts.
Yes, those things are facts but the mentality when it comes to [an] international game is completely different from a local game, Andy said in reference to his team not have a recognize game ahead of their clash at home to their Malian Counterparts.
“The players including the officials understand what is at stake. We have played local friendlies and we lost and won. I think it shows our pedigree is still there and we are going to build on that.”
For his part Watanga FC forward Chauncy Freeman said they are ready to defend their home.
He said event though Stade Malien is a big club in Africa but they are confident of defeating the visitors at home.
Freeman who was instrumental in Watanga winning their first league title in 25 years said they will put in their all to make fans proud.
