The tournament will feature players from 24 African nations at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, positioning Liberia at the center of the continent’s competitive Scrabble landscape.
Anticipation is building ahead of Thursday’s official kickoff. Defending champion Nigeria is eyeing another continental title, Kenya is sending a massive contingent, and neighboring Sierra Leone is making its journey by road.
Participating athletes will compete for both individual and national honors in a sport that requires vocabulary mastery, spatial strategy, board management, and mental stamina.
Contingents Arrive as Nigeria Targets Title Defense
Kenya began its arrivals on Tuesday evening, with an initial group landing at Roberts International Airport aboard ASKY Airlines at 5:50 p.m.
While 15 members of the delegation received government sponsorship, the total Kenyan contingent is expected to be substantially larger, with team officials indicating up to 32 players could represent the East African power.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s national team officially departed for Monrovia on Tuesday, intent on defending its continental crown against top-tier contenders and emerging nations.
Sierra Leone is also scheduled to enter Liberia by road via the Bo Waterside border crossing, adding a strong West African regional presence.
Association President: “Liberia Is Prepared”
Addressing journalists at the Ministry of Information, Liberian Scrabble Association (LSA) President Lester Morris confirmed that all hosting arrangements are complete and urged Liberians to attend in large numbers.
“Liberia is fully prepared to host this championship,” Morris said, encouraging the public to support local players and witness high-level intellectual sport firsthand.
Liberia, hosting the ASC represents both a test of its sports management capabilities and a major opportunity for local players to test their skills against the continent’s best.
Four Days of High-Stakes Strategy
The championship officially opens on Thursday, October 22, and concludes on Sunday, October 25.
Over ninety-six hours of continuous play, competitors will battle through a grueling schedule where dynamic word knowledge, board control, and quick decision-making will decide the ultimate winners.
By Thursday morning, administrative preparations will yield to live play as Monrovia welcomes Africa’s elite Scrabble community for four days of strategic competition.
