MONROVIA – Margibi County Senator James Emmanuel Nuquay has denied reports of procuring and subsequently donating outdated locally produced waste collection bins to support sanitation initiative in Kakata, Margibi county.
Senator Nuquay came under strong criticism over viral photos of unmodernized collection bins his office presented to authorities of Margibi for waste management in Kakata City.
But in a statement released by his office in Monrovia on Monday, June 8, Senator Nuquay termed the reports as “misinformation.”
He recalled that about two weeks ago, the Superintendent of Margibi County launched a citywide cleanup campaign aimed at improving sanitation and enhancing the appearance of Kakata, the county capital.
He disclosed that following the launch of the campaign, the Superintendent approached him (Senator Nuquay) and requested financial assistance to support the procurement of waste collection bins for the city.
According to him, the Superintendent subsequently presented a cost estimate of US$980 for the fabrication and procurement of locally produced waste BINS.
Senator Nuquay pointed out that in response to this request, and consistent with his longstanding commitment to community development and public welfare, he provided the US$980 in cash to support the initiative.
He emphasized that his contribution was made solely on the basis of the request and cost estimate submitted by the Superintendent. “The Office of Senator James Emmanuel Nuquay wishes to address, with clarity and responsibility, recent misinformation circulating on certain media platforms and social media regarding the Senator’s support for a waste management initiative in Kakata City. It is important to emphasize that
Senator Nuquay’s Office did not participate in, supervise, manage, or execute the procurement process.”
He maintained that the funds were provided directly to the Superintendent, whose office independently handled the acquisition and presentation of the waste BINS.
He clarified that he did not select, design, approve, fabricate or purchase the BINS in question. According to him, decisions regarding the specifications, design, construction and procurement of the bins were made entirely by those responsible for implementing the project within the Superintendent’s Office.
Senator Nuquay noted that any claim or suggestion that he (Senator Nuquay) bears responsibility for the design or quality of the bins is factually incorrect and misleading.
“The Superintendent further informed Senator Nuquay that representatives from his office would be invited to attend the official presentation of the bins, which subsequently took place as communicated. This Office is aware that photographs of the waste bins have been circulated by certain individuals and media entities in an apparent attempt to mock and discredit Senator Nuquay’s contribution.”
Senator Nuquay, however, condemned attempts to discredit his contribution towards promoting good sanitation in the county.
He stated that efforts to politicize and ridicule an act of public-minded support undermine constructive community engagement and distract from the broader objective of improving sanitation services for the residents of Kakata.
“Senator Nuquay’s record of public service speaks for itself. Throughout his tenure, he has consistently supported communities through practical, needs-based interventions—not for publicity or personal benefit, but out of a sincere commitment to improving the lives of the people he serves. This initiative is no exception.”
He, however, called responsible media institutions, commentators, and members of the public to exercise fairness, verify facts before publication, and refrain from amplifying misinformation or politically motivated narratives.
“Senator Nuquay remains steadfast in his commitment to the people of Margibi County and the Republic of Liberia. His Office will continue to respond to the needs of citizens and support initiatives that contribute to healthier, cleaner and more prosperous communities.”
