Liberia: Catholic Archbishop of Monrovia Raises Alarm Over Youth Drug Abuse, Calls for Legal Defence of Church Properties

Monrovia – Catholic Archbishop of Monrovia, His Grace Gabriel Blamo Snosio Jubwe, has raised alarm over the growing wave of drug abuse among Liberian youth, describing it as a “national tragedy” that is devastating families and communities.

Delivering his homily on Sunday, September 14, at the Immaculate Conception Parish, Archbishop Jubwe said parents’ hearts are “bleeding” as many young people fall victim to illegal drugs.

“We see many of our youth, our children, dying right before us from drugs. When mothers gave birth, did they dedicate those children to become drug addicts or drug traders? No,” he said, urging families to turn to God and take responsibility for shaping the future generation.

Concerns Over Catholic Education

Archbishop Jubwe also expressed concern over declining Catholic enrollment in Catholic-run schools, citing figures from the Immaculate Conception School where only 102 of 509 students are Catholic.

“Shockingly, Catholics are not taking their own education system seriously. Others are now dominating the system. But our schools were established to fulfil our mission—to educate and evangelise,” he said, calling on Catholic parents to reclaim ownership of Catholic education.

Church Property Rights

The Archbishop further warned against threats to Church properties, vowing to pursue legal action where necessary.

“If the need be that the Church will go to court, we will. We will not remain silent while our properties are taken away. This is why the Catholic Lawyers Association must stand up to defend the Church,” he declared.

Induction of Catholic Lawyers

The service also witnessed the induction of new members into the Catholic Lawyers Association of Liberia, including Cllr. Nelson, Deputy Police Inspector for Operations; Atty. Martin Tumoe, Rivercess County Attorney; and Atty. Saye Gbanlekpeh.

Speaking during the induction, Association President Cllr. Daryl Ambrose Nmah reaffirmed their commitment to defending the Church’s legal interests and addressing misconceptions.

“There have been rumours that Catholics can’t go to court. That has prompted people to infringe on the rights of members and the Church. Going forward, we will remain firm in pursuing legal cases,” he said.

Nmah stressed that the Association seeks “Catholics who are lawyers, not lawyers who are Catholics,” emphasizing loyalty to faith and the Church’s mission.

Archbishop Jubwe’s message formed part of his ongoing pastoral tour of parishes across Liberia, aimed at reinforcing Catholic identity and strengthening the Church’s role in education, faith, and legal advocacy.
