GRAND BASSA – The Superintendent of Grand Bassa County, Karyou Johnson, has officially unveiled the architectural blueprint for an ongoing mini-park and beautification project situated in the heart of Buchanan city.

The project, strategically located directly in front of the St. Peter’s Claver Catholic High School, features a dual-purpose design incorporating a historic maritime heritage monument and an expansive public relaxation space tailored for students, local residents, and commuters.
Speaking during an inspection of the construction site over the weekend, Supt. Johnson revealed that the project was born out of a deeply personal vision shared with his family regarding sustainable civic development and community legacy.
“The idea was inspired by deep reflection with my wife on the concepts of legacy and long-term public impact,” Supt. Johnson stated. “We wanted to create a lasting, meaningful infrastructure that would remain beneficial to the people of Buchanan long after our tenure in office.”
The Superintendent further clarified that the central maritime monument is being funded as a personal gift from his immediate family to the citizens of Grand Bassa County.
The monument is specifically designed to honor the historical contributions of Grand Bassa to Liberia’s seafaring and maritime industry, while simultaneously strengthening cultural pride among the younger generation.
Upon completion, the mini-park is expected to significantly upgrade the urban landscape of the port city.
According to the blueprint, the space will function as a safe, accessible community hub for: “Evening leisure and relaxation for families and visitors, informal community gatherings and youth networking, and outdoor educational discussions and civic study groups.’’
Supt. Johnson emphasized that the physical location of the park was chosen intentionally to impact the student population.
By placing it directly opposite one of the city’s prominent high schools, the space aims to provide an inspiring environment for hundreds of students who pass by daily, serving as a constant reminder of the county’s rich history and identity.
Engineers on-site have indicated that structural work is moving steadily, with project managers targeting a formal dedication ceremony in July, as part of the activities leading up to the national independence celebrations.
Residents have highly praised the initiative, noting that Buchanan has long lacked designated public parks and green spaces for youth relaxation and cultural reflection.
With the blueprint now public, the mini-park is poised to become a landmark symbol of heritage and a model for public-space development within Grand Bassa County.
