British Ambassador to Liberia Lauds Life For African Mothers

Monrovia – The British Ambassador accredited to Liberia has lauded the United Kingdom (UK-based) non-governmental health group, Life for African Mothers (LFAM) for providing training to local midwives here.

Life for African Mothers is a Maternal Health charity group aiming to make birth safer in Sub Saharan Africa, by providing medication to treat eclampsia and post-partum hemorrhage.

By providing medication to treat the complications of child birth, LFAM has been able to support hospitals and health centers across Africa and see huge reductions in maternal mortality.

Speaking Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the closing ceremony of the first batch or training of midwives here, David Belgrove OBE, described the training as very significant to Liberian midwives, who are striving to save lives.

“I want to thank you ever so much for your contribution here in the health sector. By this, I think you are more Ambassadors than I do,” added the British envoy.

LFAM’s Country Director, Mr. Abdul-Rahman Bah, said the training, which is expected to end in May of next year, will train up 408 midwives.

According to him, the initiative is being sponsored by the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) with the hope of reducing infant mortality rate in the country. 

“The training exercise has been blessed with the full sponsorship of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) and we want to appreciate them for their kind sponsorship,” stated the LFAM’s Country Director. 

Mr. Bah disclosed that the training program will also reach Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Nimba Counties.

For her part, Helen Loewenstein, Lead of the medical group, lauded the efforts and commitment of local midwives in Liberia despite having low level of training.

Like Mr. Bah, Madam Loewenstein added that group will do all it can to ensure that the targeted numbers of midwives are trained.
