Liberia’s Silver-Winning Amputee Team Returns to ‘Neglect’, Not Honor

MONROVIA – What should have been a proud moment of national celebration has once again exposed Liberia’s failure to honor the very heroes who consistently elevate the country’s name across West Africa and beyond.

Fresh from the inaugural West African Para Games, where they impressively clinched the silver medal, the Liberia Amputee National football Team returned home on Sunday only to be met with frustration and neglect.

Instead of a dignified welcome befitting silver medalists, the national icons were squeezed into an old, worn-out commercial bus, an apparent insult that sparked outrage among supporters and bystanders.

Historic Performance, Disgraceful Reception

At the Para Games, the Liberian Amputee Football team fought their way to the finals, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Nigeria in a thrilling, high-energy showdown.

Their performance earned widespread respect, with organizers and fans praising their discipline, determination, and remarkable skill.

The Confederation of African Amputee Football (CAAF) commended the team’s commitment to advancing the sport in the region.

Analysts described Liberia’s showing as “brave,” “tactically sharp,” and “a model of sportsmanship.” Liberia made history.

Yet, the welcome they received suggested the achievement was irrelevant.

A National Shame

Rather than being met with flags, applause, or even basic pre-arranged transportation, the athletes, many of whom overcame significant personal hardship to represent Liberia, were reportedly forced onto a commercial bus that looked unfit for everyday commuters, let alone national representatives.

Witnesses described the scene as painful to watch. One visibly upset supporter told FrontPage Africa, “They played their hearts out for Liberia, and this is the thanks they get?”

This shameful treatment exposed a recurring national problem.

Liberia celebrates its athletes only when they win, but often abandons them when it’s time to provide fundamental support.

Failure of Authority and Accountability

FrontPage Africa has learned that multiple sporting stakeholders were aware of the team’s return but failed to organize even the most basic reception.

There was no official bus, no escort, and no public acknowledgment of their silver medal achievement from key authorities.

This raises critical questions for the Government and sporting bodies:

A Call for Immediate Action

The Liberia Amputee National Team deserves far better. A proper, reliable team bus is not a luxury; it is a necessity and a basic sign of respect for athletes who have demonstrated immense dedication for their country.

The government and sporting authorities must step up immediately to remedy this oversight.

Respect begins with action, not merely with supportive public statements.

A country that fails to honor its heroes ultimately fails itself. These men represented the nation with pride and heart. They returned home with a silver medal but were welcomed with inexcusable disregard. They carried the nation—both literally on one leg and figuratively on their backs. The very least Liberia can do is ensure they are carried home with dignity.
