Monrovia – Vice President Joseph N.Boakai and delegation have returned to the Country following a successful participation in the World Humanitarian Summit and the Midterm Review of the Istanbul Programme of Action in Turkey.
Vice President Boakai departed the Country on the 20th of May to represent the Government of Liberia at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul and the Midterm Review of the Istanbul Program of Action held in Antalya, Turkey.
At the World Humanitarian Summit, he held bilateral talks with the Delegation from Italy, led by the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation. Mr. Mario Giro.
The two sides met on the fringes of the World Humanitarian Summit organized by the United Nations.
Vice President Boakai lauded the Italian Government for its financial, material, and manpower support in the creation and advancement of the A.M.Dogloitti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia and called for greater technical cooperation and stronger ties between Italy and Liberia.
On the sidelines of the World Humanitarian Summit, Vice President Boakai also participated in the African Union High-level panel on humanitarian Effectiveness in Africa which called for a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development and a continent that is politically integrated and united based on the ideas of Pan Africanism and the Vision of Africa’s Renaissance.
During the High- Level panel on humanitarian Effectiveness, Vice President Boakai said he wants to see a continent that will be inclusive and called for full disclosure of resources that are spent on African Countries by International Non-governmental Organizations.
Addressing the Istanbul Program of Action in Antalya Friday, Vice President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the protocols of the Istanbul Program of Action,(IPoA) at the Midterm Review.
Addressing the delegates, Vice President Boakai said, Liberia adopted its first five year development plan, the agenda for Transformation and the national vision 2030.
The agenda focuses on key pillars including peace, justice, security, the rule of law, economic transformation, human development, governance, public institutions and cross-cutting issues.
Earlier, Vice President Boakai speaking at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul under the Chairmanship of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon recounted the measures that Liberia has taken to detect and avoid conflict. He said an Early warning system is being put into place to detect possible areas of conflict in the Ecowas region.
On Thursday May 26, the Vice President’s Office issued a statement from Antalya stating that the Vice President was returning home in the wake of recent political and legal developments in the Country.
In the statement the Vice President called for a rational and thought examined approach to issues affecting the Country, urging that Liberians should in times like this fall back on their keen ability to unify and fight challenges no matter how daunting the odds may be.
Speaking to newsmen on arrival Sunday, Vice President Boakai described the two conferences he attended as very successful and that Liberia has returned to the fold of the International Community and taken its rightful place in world affairs.
