Monrovia – Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Toga McIntosh has joined the Liberian People Democratic Party of recused Speaker Alex Tyler.
Dr. McIntosh, who most recently served as a Vice President for ECOWAS, had initially expressed interest in vying for the Unity Party’s standard bearer position but dropped out of the race in the last hour.
On Saturday it was a bit of a surprise that he joined the LPDP.
Dr. Mcintosh told a program organized to welcome him that he came to “join hands with other partisans at the LPDP to ensure victory in 2017.
“We are stronger together,” he told a colourful ceremony at the party’s headquarters on the Airfield.
“For me, I see my being here as the will of God”.
The party’s chairman, Representative Moses Kollie welcomed Dr. McIntosh to the party and said “those who felt that if they destroyed Tyler and Kollie then they have destroyed the LPDP were badly mistaken.
“There are many Kollie’s and Tyler’s,” he said.
“Dr. Toga McIntosh, this is your home. This is the party of the indigenous”.
He described Dr. McIntosh’s move as very significant and a signal to the country that the democrats will unite and that 2017 will not be a “puppet show where Madam Sirleaf hand picks her successor.”
It is likely that Dr. McIntosh, who served recently at the ECOWAS Commission as Vice President, will contest the election on the party’s ticket, especially when recused Speaker Tyler, the party’s political leader, faces indictment over the Sable Mining bribery scandal.
Secretary General Menipake Dumoe told FrontPageAfrica Saturday that more influential politicians are also expected to join the party in the coming days.
