Monrovia – MichComp Technologies, Inc. (MC Tech.) in collaboration with National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) has opened an assistive technology computer lab in Brewerville for youths that aims to empower the students with digitalized learning materials to boost their innovative and creative skills.
Speaking in an interview with FPA, the head of the MC Tech Michael Fayiah said the company is committed to ensuring more young people achieve their potential.
Mr. Fayiah said the computer lab will help youths to be fully prepared for the job market, access computer technology and educational programming.
He said MC Tech partnered with National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), and GUCDA to open the computer lab that will benefit more than 180 youngsters.
The collaboration according is part of NOCAL’s initiative to create educational, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities to more than 300, 000.00 youths in the 15th counties of Liberia.
“The need for our establishment is to salvage the computer knowledge deficit and gap experiencing by school going kids in Liberia.
Research conducted reveals that 8 out of 10 high school graduates in Liberia, lacks basic computers knowledge and operation skills.
This research also reveals that between 40-60% of college students in Liberia also lack the basic computer knowledge and operational skills.
“Various research and questioners fill out by employers has established that basic computer knowledge and operational skills are valuable to any profession and these skills are necessary requirements for any employment in the formal education sector.
“We are committed to the creation of a better tomorrow built by enthusiastic young men and women with a shared vision of making Liberia and Africa a better place for all.
“We will nurture an environment of excellence; innovation and continuous learning to enable individuals to attain their full potential.
“We will encourage all to take a calculated risk in the pursuit of excellence.”
Fayiah said MC Tech is going to provide Liberian kids with the requisite ICT education complemented by secretarial and entrepreneurial skills that enable them to attract gainful employment which will allow them to contribute meaningfully to the rebuilding process of our country; this will help to alleviate poverty.
Training for students includes MS Windows 8/10, Typing Tutorial, MS Word 2007/2010, MS Excel 2007/2010, MS Access 2007/2010, MS Power Point 2007/2010, MS Publisher 2007/2010 and Graphic Arts/Designs.
He said the training was meant for 120 but had to increase it to 180 due to continuous request from
Fayiah said the computer lab comprises of 30 desktops and 8 staff for 2 centers who will train the students from basic computer skills.
He said the program to increase access to education by learners with lack of knowledge on computer technology.
“A similar project will successfully be launch soon in other areas for youths, as an organization we want to set up the computer labs that will increase youth participation in computer technology,” said Fayiah.
