Gbarnga, Bong County – The National Council of Chiefs of Liberia has reaffirmed its strong support for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court and the National Anti-Corruption Court.

The commitment was highlighted during a landmark two-day dialogue in Gbarnga, Bong County, from February 9–10, where 15 traditional chiefs from across Liberia convened with the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC-L).

- Endorsement of Process and Leadership: The chiefs praised OWECC-L’s efforts and commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his political will.
- Legislative and Executive Milestones: They noted the Legislature’s Joint Resolution No. 001/2024 and President Boakai’s Executive Order No. 131 (subsequently renewed/replaced by No. 148).
- Roadmap to Operations: OWECC-L submitted a timeline to the President, targeting late 2026 for the National Anti-Corruption Court and 2027 for the War and Economic Crimes Court.
- Funding and Partnerships: The Government of Liberia has funded the establishment office, supported by collaboration with international partners and civil society.
- Accountability Goals: Backed by the Traditional Council and the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), the courts aim to end impunity, deliver justice for war victims, and foster national reconciliation.

Executive Director Pledges Commitment at Traditional Chiefs Ceremony
In a vibrant ceremony in Monrovia, amid rhythmic drumbeats and colorful traditional attire, Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, Executive Director of the War and Economic Crimes Court, extended heartfelt gratitude to Liberia’s esteemed traditional chiefs.
Attended by community elders adorned in symbolic beads and vibrant kente cloths, the event showcased the chiefs’ unwavering support for establishing the court—a pivotal step toward justice and national reconciliation.
Speaking with resolute conviction under fluttering national flags, Dr. Barbu praised the chiefs for their guidance and moral authority, calling it “the bedrock of this movement.”
He pledged his unwavering dedication to ensuring that President Boakai’s administration achieves its ambitious goal. “Under this visionary leadership, we will leave no stone unturned,” Dr. Barbu affirmed, committing to transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity in the court’s formation.
The ceremony concluded with traditional libations and pledges of solidarity, signaling a united front as Liberia moves closer to this historic milestone, which aims to deliver accountability, foster healing, and deter future crimes in the post-war era.
