Monrovia — Former President George Manneh Weah has arrived at the Monrovia Central Prison to visit former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor, who is being held on pretrial detention in connection with the government’s US$317 million cocaine investigation.
Taylor is facing several charges, including drug trafficking and money laundering. She has denied the allegations.
Weah arrived in Liberia Wednesday evening to a rousing welcome from supporters after spending several months abroad. Speaking shortly after his return, the former president condemned the charges against his former vice president, describing them as “bogus,” and promised to visit her at the prison.
True to his promise, Weah arrived at the Monrovia Central Prison Thursday afternoon, where he was greeted by scores of supporters gathered outside the facility.
The prison compound was heavily guarded by police as Weah, accompanied by senior officials of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), made his way inside to meet Taylor.
Among those accompanying the former president are CDC Chairman Janga Kowo and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Bhofal Chambers.
The visit comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the government’s prosecution of Taylor and other suspects in the massive cocaine investigation.
Weah is expected to address journalists following his meeting with Taylor.
