Liberia: Tension Mounts in Nimba’s District #5 Ahead of By-Election, Several Hospitalized Following Violent Clashes

Buutuo Town – As citizens of Buu YAO prepare to go to the polls on Tuesday, August 12 to elect their representative to replace former representative now Senator Samuel Kogar, tensions have run high in the district.
The past three days have been marred by election violence, creating panic amongst voters and a sense of unease throughout the community.
Reports of clashes between rival political factions had spread like wildfire, with instances of vandalism, intimidation and even physical altercations being reported.

Campaign posters were torn down, political rallies were disrupted and rumors of voter suppression tactics circulated, adding to the sense of fear and uncertainty.
Local authorities were scrambling to maintain security and ensure the safety of voters and polling stations on election day.

The presence of law enforcement officers has been heightened, but many residents remain wary of the potential for further violence and unrest.
Despite the turmoil, the citizens of Buu YAO remain determined to exercise their democratic right and participate in the electoral process. They hope that the upcoming election would bring about positive change and a new beginning for their district, free from the fear and intimidation that had marred the lead-up to the polls.

The clashes erupted between supporters of the two main candidates in the by-election, Korto Kwagrue of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) Party and Borros Barleah, an independent candidate. Both candidates are among ten vying for the representative seat.
The fighting between the rival supporters has not only resulted in injuries but also destruction of properties, causing widespread concern in the community. The violence is reported to have created a tense atmosphere, disrupting the electoral process and raising fears about the potential for further unrest if peace is not restored swiftly.

Local security forces have been deployed to manage the situation, with efforts underway to prevent further violence and maintain order. Despite these efforts, the clashes have highlighted the fragile nature of political competition in the district, where intense rivalry among candidates can quickly escalate into violence.

This outbreak comes amid a broader context of electoral tensions in Liberia, where past elections have occasionally been marred by violence and intimidation mainly in District Number Four in Nimba County.
The situation in Nimba District Five underscores the urgent need for peaceful campaign strategies and responsible leadership to ensure a credible and safe electoral process.

Community leaders, civil society groups and international observers have called for calm and dialogue between the factions to diffuse tensions. They emphasized that democratic competition should be conducted without violence, respecting the rights of all candidates and their supporters to freely and safely participate in the electoral process.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, the primary focus remains on providing medical care to those injured and restoring peace in this volatile election period. The outcome of the by-election will be critical not just for the district’s representation but also for demonstrating the resilience of Liberia’s democratic institutions in the face of adversity.
