Liberia: Tangier Med Port Commences Promised Facelift to Freeport of Monrovia

Tangier – The tangible results of President George M. Weah’s recent negotiations with the Moroccan Government through the Tangier Med Port Authority to transform Liberia’s seaports are now being set in motion. This significant move aims to address various logistical and technical challenges, including inadequate pilotage, infrastructure improvements, and human resource development at the National Port Authority.

President Weah initially secured support for the critical needs of Liberia’s ports during the 14th Edition of the MEDAYs International Forum, where he passionately advocated for Liberia’s thriving business climate before an audience of over 5,000 delegates representing nearly 200 countries.

As part of this engagement, the Moroccan Government, through the Tangier Port Authority, is ready to offer technical assistance to the National Port Authority, aligning with the CDC-led government’s agenda to reduce costs at the port, thereby stimulating commerce and trade.

This collaborative effort will culminate in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the establishment of a technical working committee. The terms and conditions of this cooperation will be structured around the fundamental capacity development framework for the National Port Authority.

These developments follow an official bilateral discussion and working visit by the NPA Managing Director, Nebo, to the Tangier Med Port, aligning with the commitments made to President Weah. During the visit, the NPA Director expressed profound gratitude on behalf of President Weah to the Moroccan government, particularly Tangier Port Authority’s Director General, Hassan Adkari, for their collaborative efforts in making Liberia’s ports more efficient and positioning them as premium ports.

Tangier Med Port holds a prestigious position as one of the world’s largest ports and has played a pivotal role in supporting the development of ports and economic zones in more than 13 countries.

The NPA Director and delegation were given a guided tour of the Tangier Med Port, along with renewed commitments from their Moroccan counterparts to President George M. Weah and the Liberian government regarding the revitalization and development of the Greenville Port.

Honorable Nebo also expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials of the Liberian Embassy in Morocco for their diligent diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring the development of Liberia’s ports.

As part of the collaboration, the first group of NPA staff is expected to travel to Morocco for specialized training in marine operations upon the signing of the MOU. This move is anticipated to further enhance the capabilities and efficiency of Liberia’s ports.
