In 2009, the UN General Assembly proclaimed July 18, 2009, as “Nelson Mandela International Day” in honour of the former President of South Africa’s contributions to the culture of peace and freedom.

The UN Resolution honours Mandela’s principles and his commitment to serving humanity in the areas of racial relations, conflict resolution, gender equality, the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, human rights promotion and protection, reconciliation, and the fight against poverty.

The former South African President’s contribution to the global fight for democracy and the advancement of a culture of peace is recognized by the resolution.

The day is being observed every year by the United Nations around the world.

Nelson Mandela International Day (2024) was being observed with the theme “Combating poverty and inequality is in our hands.”

In observance of the day in Monrovia, South African Embassy in Liberia alongside Lonestar Cell MTN donated several items at the Children Pediatric Wall at the John F. Kennedy.

South African Ambassador to Liberia, H.E Prof Iqbal Jhazbhay, headed his team to the JFK to distribute to each kid a bag pad containing powder soap, paper tissue, and other nonfood items among others.

Prof Jhazbhay said the donation was the embassy’s way of sharing love and celebrating the legacy of the former South African leader.

The South African envoy to Liberia disclosed that employees at the Embassy near Monrovia voluntarily contributed to the purchasing of the items that were donated to the kids.

“The employees at the embassy in Liberia used their own finances to purchase the item as we observe them by showing love to the kids at the hospital,” he said.

He said it’s time for everyone to rediscover the principles that motivated Nelson Mandela.

He noted that Nelson Mandela committed his entire life to the struggle for equality, justice, and harmony.

“His legacy continues to inspire people across the world” he noted.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Tamba, Chief Medical Officer of JFK appreciated the gift from the Ambassador and his team and expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiary kids.

Dr. Tamba said he was glad to receive the donation from the South African ambassador and his team.

Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18 July to honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.

This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities.
