CAPITOL HILL — The Liberian Senate has passed a bill establishing the Administrative District of Gbea-Gblor in Nimba County.

The Senate’s decision came during its regular session on Thursday, May 29, following the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Internal Affairs, Governance, and Reconciliation.
A total of sixteen senators voted in favor of the measure, thereby granting concurrence with the House and advancing the legislation to the next stage of implementation.
The Act, which seeks to formally create and provide governance structure for the new district in Lower Nimba County, was originally introduced in the House of Representatives by Nimba County District 6 Representative Dorwohn Twain Gleekia. It aims to decentralize administrative authority and bring governance closer to residents in the area.
“In accordance with the statutory responsibility of the committee, coupled with the enhanced benefits envisioned for the people of the administrative district in Nimba County, the committee unanimously recommended to Plenary of the Senate to concur with the House of Representatives on the bill entitled ‘An Act to Create the Administrative District of Gbea-Gblor and Provide for the Governance of Same within Lower Nimba County, Republic of Liberia,’ the committee noted in its report.
Supporters of the bill argue that the creation of the district will improve service delivery, strengthen local governance, and enable more direct representation for citizens residing in the region. It is also expected to facilitate more efficient planning, budgeting, and implementation of development initiatives.
Meanwhile, during the same session, the Senate confirmed three key government nominees to high-level diplomatic and ministerial positions. Henry Fahnbulleh and George Patten were confirmed as Liberia’s ambassadors to Egypt and South Africa, respectively. Both individuals are seasoned diplomats, with Patten previously serving as Liberia’s ambassador to the United States.
Additionally, the Senate confirmed Oscar Mulbah, the current Director of Press and Public Affairs at the Liberian Senate, to the position of Assistant Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of National Defense. His appointment signals a shift from legislative media relations to a broader public communication role within the executive branch.
