Liberia: Rep. Benson Raises Alarm Over Exclusion of Creative Arts From FY2026 National Budget

CAPITOL BUILDING, Monrovia – Representative Bernard Blue Benson Jr. (District 17, Montserrado County), has expressed strong concern over the omission of Liberia’s Creative Industries from the Draft National Budget for Fiscal Year 2026, despite the budget reaching a milestone of US$1.2 billion.

Rep. Benson, who has emerged as the leading advocate for the sector at the Legislature, described the exclusion as disappointing—especially given the role artists play in national development and the frequent use of their platforms by politicians during election periods.

The Creative Sector encompasses a wide range of talents, including musicians, comedians, actors, filmmakers, and other cultural practitioners.

The lawmaker registered his concerns during deliberations on the preliminary report on the revenue component of the draft FY2026 national budget, presented by the House Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance.

Rep. Benson emphasized the need for government to recognize and prioritize the Creative Arts industry, citing its vast potential to boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the cultural vibrancy of the country.

He called on his colleagues in government to reconsider their position and ensure that the sector is adequately captured in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget to support young creatives and strengthen Liberia’s cultural economy.
