Yekepa, Nimba County — ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Liberia’s economic transformation, community development, and workforce empowerment following a high-level visit by Liberia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. Wilmot Paye Murray, and senior ministry officials to the company’s operations in Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa Counties.

Speaking at the conclusion of the three-day visit, ArcelorMittal Liberia Chief Executive Officer Michiel Van Der Merwe described the engagement as highly successful and reflective of the strong partnership between the company and the Government of Liberia.
“We are happy to report a good and successful visit from the Minister of Mines and his team,” Van Der Merwe said. “We visited Buchanan, the new port facilities, the rail workshop, the mining operations at Gangra, the concentrator, and Yekepa Township. I think the whole delegation was happy with the progress that has been made.”
The ministerial delegation toured key components of AML’s multi-billion-dollar mining expansion project, including the upgraded Buchanan Port facilities, railway infrastructure, processing plants, and active mining operations. The visit also provided an opportunity for government officials to assess ongoing community development initiatives being undertaken by the company.
A Partnership Built on Shared Goals
Van Der Merwe emphasized that ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Government of Liberia share a common objective: improving the lives of Liberians while ensuring the country’s natural resources generate sustainable economic benefits.
“The same people that government represents are the same people who work for us and live in the communities where we operate,” he explained. “We are actually partners because ArcelorMittal Liberia also belongs to the people of Liberia. We are shareholders together. There is really good cooperation between us and the Ministry.”
According to the CEO, the company maintains regular engagement with the Ministry of Mines and Energy on operational, regulatory, and community matters.
“We interact on a daily basis. We benefit from the expertise of highly experienced professionals within the Ministry, and together we work toward responsible mining and national development.”
The comments underscore the increasingly collaborative relationship between the Government of Liberia and one of the country’s largest foreign investors as both parties work to maximize the long-term benefits of the mining sector.
Transforming Communities Through Infrastructure Investment
Beyond mining operations, ArcelorMittal Liberia continues to invest heavily in community infrastructure and social development projects across its operational areas.
Van Der Merwe highlighted several initiatives already completed or currently underway, including the construction of water kiosks, extensive road rehabilitation, refurbishment of more than 500 housing units in Yekepa, and the ongoing renovation of public facilities.
Among the flagship projects is the construction of a modern sports complex designed to serve residents throughout the region.
“One of the projects we are really looking forward to is the new sports facility that we are building for everybody to use and enjoy,” he said.
Additional investments include improvements around the P-Market area, upgrades to surrounding road networks, and support for the completion of the police station in Sanniquellie.
The CEO acknowledged that residents are eager to see projects completed as quickly as possible but stressed the company’s commitment to quality and sustainability.
“Everybody wants to see things happen faster, but we also want to make sure we deliver quality projects that people will be proud of for years to come.”
Supporting Liberian Businesses
A key component of AML’s development strategy is increasing local participation in project delivery and procurement.
Van Der Merwe revealed that more than 17 Liberian contractors are currently engaged in construction and renovation projects linked to the company’s operations.
“We have significantly increased the number of local contractors involved in the construction work,” he noted. “That creates opportunities for Liberian businesses and contributes directly to local economic growth.”
The increased use of local contractors aligns with Liberia’s broader local content objectives and demonstrates the company’s commitment to creating economic opportunities beyond direct employment.
Building Liberia’s Future Workforce
Perhaps one of the most significant success stories highlighted during the visit was ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Vocational Training Center (VTC), which has become a cornerstone of the company’s efforts to build a skilled Liberian workforce.
Van Der Merwe disclosed that the company has invested more than US$14 million in the facility and has already trained over 200 Liberians as skilled artisans and operators.
“Every graduate who has completed the training program is now fully employed,” he said proudly. “They received world-class training at no cost, received stipends while studying, and today they are earning good, well-remunerated jobs.”
The CEO explained that the VTC is not only a social investment but also a strategic investment in Liberia’s future.
“We need skilled Liberians to run and manage these operations going forward. The VTC is one of our greatest success stories because it uplifts lives while helping us build the workforce needed for the future.”
Industry observers have frequently cited the VTC as one of Liberia’s most successful private-sector workforce development initiatives.
Strong Community Engagement
Addressing concerns about community relations, Van Der Merwe emphasized that ArcelorMittal Liberia remains deeply integrated within the communities where it operates.
“Our operations sit within these communities, so we cannot separate ourselves from them,” he said.
The company continues to support community-driven projects through community development funds, including investments in schools, healthcare facilities, and other local priorities selected by residents themselves.
While acknowledging that expectations remain high due to unemployment and economic challenges across the country, Van Der Merwe said the company is working to expand alternative livelihood programs that will help communities become less dependent on mining activities alone.
“The demand is high, and we understand that,” he noted. “We are putting more effort into alternative livelihood initiatives to ensure that people have opportunities beyond the mine.”
Looking Ahead
Liberia seeks to accelerate economic growth and attract additional foreign investment, the partnership between ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Government of Liberia according to the CEO continues to be viewed as a critical driver of infrastructure development, job creation, skills transfer, and community advancement.
The successful ministerial visit provided an opportunity for government officials to witness firsthand the scale of investments being made and the progress achieved across mining operations and community projects.
For ArcelorMittal Liberia, the visit also reaffirmed the importance of collaboration with government and local stakeholders as the company advances its long-term expansion plans.
“We are proud of what has been achieved so far,” Van Der Merwe concluded. “But there is still much more to do, and we remain committed to working together with the Government of Liberia and our communities to create lasting value for the country and its people.”
