Liberia: Liberty Party Hails Liberia’s Election to UN Security Council, Credits Boakai’s Leadership

Monrovia – The Liberty Party has commended President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung for what it describes as a major diplomatic achievement, following Liberia’s election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s National Secretary General, Martin Saye Kollah, praised the administration’s foreign policy efforts, calling Liberia’s successful bid a milestone that reflects the country’s renewed credibility and global relevance.

“This election is not merely a diplomatic success—it is a reaffirmation of Liberia’s steadfast dedication to global peace, security, and diplomacy,” Kollah said.

The statement describes the development as more than a political win, highlighting it as evidence of President Boakai’s leadership and international appeal.

“It highlights President Boakai’s integrity and leadership, and we are confident his administration will make meaningful contributions to the Security Council’s mission of safeguarding international peace and stability,” Kollah added.

Liberia’s return to the Security Council comes nearly five decades after it last served in 1961. The election, held at the UN General Assembly in New York on June 3, 2025, saw Liberia secure 181 votes—far exceeding the two-thirds threshold required for election.

The West African country joins Colombia, Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Latvia as new non-permanent members beginning January 1, 2026.

Founded as a member of the United Nations in 1945, Liberia has historically played a vocal role in peacekeeping efforts across Africa. According to Kollah, the country’s re-entry into the Security Council is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to discussions on global peace and security, especially from the perspective of post-conflict states.

“This is a moment of national pride. Liberia is once again being recognized—not for conflict or crisis—but for leadership and contribution to global peace,” Kollah stated.

The Liberty Party emphasized that Liberia’s return to the UNSC reflects the growing international respect for the Boakai administration and its focus on diplomacy, multilateral cooperation, and good governance.

“The election validates the administration’s global standing and diplomatic finesse,” the statement noted. “It reflects the growing respect Liberia commands within the international community and reinforces our mission to build a safer, more just world.”

The party also called for bipartisan support for the government’s international engagements. Kollah urged Liberians of all political backgrounds to embrace the achievement as a collective national victory.

“We use this opportunity to pledge the Liberty Party’s continued support for Liberia’s engagement with the international community,” Kollah said. “Together, we can do better—and this achievement is proof of that shared belief.”
