Liberia: FAO Deepens Ties with Liberia through Launch of High-Tech Situation Room

ROME, ITALY – The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), QU Dongyu, has unveiled the newly inaugurated Liberia Situation Room at the FAO headquarters in Rome, describing it as a state-of-the-art, science-driven decision-making hub aimed at bolstering food security and resilience in Liberia.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 44th Session of the FAO Ministerial Conference, Mr. Qu said the Situation Room is equipped with advanced functionalities that will enable collaborative analysis and strategic planning to strengthen Liberia’s capacity for anticipatory action and boost agricultural productivity.

“The Liberia Situation Room combines modern design with advanced functionality, enabling collaborative analysis and strategic planning to increase resilience and anticipatory action,” the FAO Director-General noted.

He emphasized that the facility will also support the Shock-Driven Food Crises Initiative under FAO’s financial mechanism—an approach aimed at shifting responses to food crises from reactive to proactive.

The Liberia Situation Room will monitor 12 critical risk factors, providing real-time insights at both national and sub-regional levels. Users will have access to visual tools and data dashboards that enable interpretation of food security risks and timely responses to potential threats.

Mr. Qu further disclosed that the Situation Room will generate risk profiles tailored for reinsurance companies, supporting the development of anticipatory insurance mechanisms in high-risk, vulnerable settings.

“The Liberia Situation Room embodies FAO’s commitment to harnessing technology and partnerships to protect the most vulnerable populations,” he said.

Alongside the Liberia Situation Room, the FAO Director-General also inaugurated the Netherlands Acceleration Zone, a complementary facility designed to enhance the organization’s global efficiency and effectiveness in delivering on its mandate.

Mr. Qu expressed appreciation to the Government of Liberia, particularly the Minister of Agriculture, J. Alexander Nuetah, who was present at the inauguration ceremony, for Liberia’s generous contribution to the establishment of the Situation Room.

The initiative marks a major milestone in strengthening Liberia’s partnership with the FAO and underscores the global organization’s commitment to using innovation and data-driven approaches to address food insecurity and agricultural development challenges.
