Monrovia – Barely 48 hours after Liberia’s Cabinet mandated appropriate intervention amid the current situation at the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicines and School of Pharmacy at the University of Liberia, a donation of assorted items were made over the weekend.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the Cabinet, led by its Director General, Jordon Sulonteh took place on Friday, August 12, 2016. It can be recalled Cabinet received updates from the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU) regarding assessment of the prevailing conditions at the Medical College.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Presidential Press Secretary, Jerolinmek M. Piah told the students that during last Cabinet Meeting their concerns were raised during which President Sirleaf pledged to address some of the issues in order to bring relief to the students.
Mr. Piah informed the students that the President intends to address their plight in stages, beginning with the humanitarian intervention over the weekend. He said President Sirleaf remains committed to the educational well-being of all Liberians including the Medical students.
Also speaking on behalf of the students was their leader, Dyujay G. Karnga. He commended the Cabinet for the visit and informed the delegation that one of the contentious issues confronting them at the institution is the stipends for 298 medical students, which he said has been delayed for some times now.
The students noted the current condition of their cafeteria, unsustainable supply of water and the rehabilitation of the dormitory, among others. Similarly, they complained about the issue of water supply, something which is now compelling them to fetch water from the ground floors to various floors of the three-storey building.
Following their engagement, the Ministerial delegation was taken on guided tour of the facility. At the end of the tour, some assorted food and non-food items, including several bags of mineral water, sardines, Chee-wees, and toiletries were presented amid a pledge to make available 50 bags of rice during the course of next week.
The Ministerial delegation including Gender Minister, Julia Duncan Cassell, Health Minister, Dr. Bernice T. Dahn, Youths and Sports, Minister Saah N’tow and PPCC Executive Director Mr. Dorbor Jallah, including the proprietress of Kumba Bendu & Sons Toiletries.
