The Editor, March 15 was Joseph Jenkins (JJ) Roberts’ Birthday in Liberia, a day celebrating the life and accomplishments of the nation’s first president. The United States of America and the Republic of Liberia have close consanguinity. Liberia was founded by freed slaves from the United States of America in 1822, 200 years ago. So it was no surprise that the United States government through its embassy near Monrovia would make a statement commemorating this day for Roberts, who was born in Virginia in the USA.

The Finnish authorities were apparently unaware of the past of the man from the crisis area: “No Google search was done”. On 16 February, the Pirkanmaa District Court ordered the release of Gibril Massaquoi, a Sierra Leonean man accused of serious war crimes related to the Liberian civil war (1999-2003), pending the outcome of the district court’s verdict.The court found that an exceptionally long period of time had elapsed since the alleged offences, almost 20 years, and that the man had been in pre-trial detention for two years.The district court has announced that it will give its ruling in March-April.…
