MONROVIA — The Bassa Stakeholders Group, a non-political organization comprising prominent citizens and professional experts from Grand Bassa County, has presented assorted sporting materials valued at over $2,000 USD to the Bassa Sports Association (BSA) to support the upcoming District League.
The initial donation, handed over during a brief ceremony in Monrovia, includes 12 sets of jerseys and 10 footballs.
The equipment is intended to support teams participating in the local tournament, which serves as the primary talent-scouting platform ahead of the National County Sports Meet scheduled for November 2026.
As the prime sponsor of the District League, the group has also earmarked L$130,000 in cash prizes for the champions and runners-up.
Speaking during the presentation, Moses Zangar Jr., Acting Chairman of the Group’s Interim Sports Committee, emphasized that the donation underscores their commitment to youth empowerment and sports development across the county.
“This support is aimed at promoting the development of home-grown talent and ensuring our young athletes have the necessary tools to compete and excel,” Zangar said.
“The District League is the foundation for identifying the best players who will proudly represent Grand Bassa at the National County Sports Meet.”
Nat Bayjay, Acting Chair on Press and Publicity, urged the BSA to restore football glory to the county following a decade-long championship drought.
“It has been exactly a decade since Grand Bassa last won the football category of the Sports Meet,” Bayjay noted.
“That is unacceptable. That’s why we are intentional with this support, which will extend to the main county teams when the Sports Meet kicks off in November.”
Receiving the items on behalf of the BSA, Secretary-General Stanley Trokon Horace expressed gratitude and promised an equitable distribution among participating teams.
The BSA has since turned over the gear to the six participating districts at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium in Buchanan.
The District League featuring both football and kickball categories across Electoral District #1 (Diahnblae), Electoral District #2 (Glakon), Electoral District #3 (Buchanan), Electoral District #4, Electoral District #5 (Wee/Kpogba), and Electoral District #6 (Neekreen) was originally scheduled for September 6–13.
However, kick-off has been temporarily postponed out of respect following the passing of former Grand Bassa Superintendent Janjay Baikpeh, with new tournament dates to be announced following his burial.
