Underdogs or Contenders? Why Liberia’s AFCON 2027 Group K Draw Is a Major Reality Check

MONROVIA – Liberia’s hopes of returning to the Africa Cup of Nations will face a major test after the Lone Star was drawn into a difficult Group K alongside Mali, Cape Verde, and Rwanda for the TotalEnergies AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

The draw, conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on May 19, 2026, places Liberia against three sides with stronger recent continental records, leaving the Lone Star with a challenging road toward qualification.

Among the teams in the group, Mali is widely viewed as the favourite due to its consistent appearances at major African tournaments and the depth of quality within its squad.

Cape Verde has also developed into one of Africa’s most disciplined and competitive teams in recent years, while Rwanda continues to grow steadily and remains a difficult opponent on home soil in Kigali.

Despite the challenges, football supporters and stakeholders in Liberia believe the group still offers an opportunity for the national team to compete, provided consistency, discipline, and proper preparation are maintained throughout the campaign.

Historical Record Raises Concern

Liberia’s head-to-head record against its Group K opponents paints a difficult picture ahead of the qualifiers.

Mali: The Lone Star has won only two of 14 meetings in all competitions, suffering seven defeats and recording five draws. Liberia has scored 14 goals while conceding 26, with its last victory over Mali coming over two decades ago in June 2004.

Cape Verde: The record also favors the Blue Sharks. In six meetings, Liberia has managed two victories but lost four times, scoring seven goals and conceding eight. The Lone Star’s last win over Cape Verde dates back to June 2011.

Rwanda: Liberia has split results evenly, with one win and one defeat from two encounters. Liberia has scored three goals and conceded six, with its lone victory recorded in October 2006.

Overall, Liberia’s combined record against all three opponents stands at a daunting five wins, 12 defeats, and five draws in 22 matches, with the Lone Star scoring 24 goals while conceding 40.

New Coach Faces Immediate Challenge

The AFCON qualifiers will provide the first major competitive assignment for newly appointed Lone Star head coach Mohammed A. Erradi, who recently signed a long-term contract with the Liberia Football Association (LFA).

Erradi has been tasked with rebuilding the national team and ending Liberia’s long absence from Africa’s premier football tournament.

Liberia has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations only twice in its history in 1996 and 2002 despite producing football legend George Weah, the only African player to win the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or.

Hope Remains Despite Underdog Status

While Liberia enters the group as an underdog on paper, supporters remain hopeful that strong home performances, tactical discipline, and improved squad organization could help the team challenge for qualification.

Many football fans view the campaign as one of Liberia’s best opportunities in recent years to make a serious push for continental football, especially with a renewed focus on rebuilding under the new coaching staff and football administration.

As preparations begin, the spotlight now shifts from the draw itself to whether the Lone Star can finally overcome history and reignite Liberia’s football ambitions on the African stage.
