President Sirleaf to Witness Signing of Electoral Peace Pact in Ghana

Monrovia – UN Special Envoy, Ibn Chambas has called on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to attend the signing ceremony of the Electoral Code of Conduct between political parties in Ghana and the National Peace Council.

The ceremony is scheduled for December 1, 2016.

The request was made when Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas met with President Sirleaf to brief her on the electoral processes taking place in The Gambia and in Ghana.

Responding, President Sirleaf thanked Dr. Chambas and said she looks forward to peaceful elections in both countries.

He then presented President Sirleaf for the invitation to witness and participate in the signing ceremony on the Electoral Code of Conduct for a free, fair and peaceful election slated for December 7, 2016.

President Sirleaf, however, expressed optimism for peaceful elections as Ghana has been doing for decades as well as set example for the rest of the continent.

She said she was confident in Ghana’s tradition to uphold peaceful election.

Special Envoy Chambas also exchanged notes on the electoral process in The Gambia from the UN and ECOWAS’s perspectives

President Sirleaf and Dr. Chambas also discussed the general security situation in the region, including the peace process in Mali, terrorist threats and the close partnership between the UN and ECOWAS.
