Monrovia – The Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Tolbert Nyenswah has been selected to serve as keynote speaker at this year’s University Consortium for Liberia gala scheduled for September 30, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.
Mr. Nyenswah will speak on the theme: “Global Health”, which brings much needed attention to Liberia’s fragile healthcare sector and the roles education and research play. The University Consortium for Liberia will also award Mr. Nyenswah as a major community partner making a difference in Liberia’s healthcare sector.
According to a National Public Health Institute release, the President University Consortium for Liberia (ULC), Ms. Cynthia L. Blandford, said they decided to make this year’s theme about global health in Liberia against the backdrop that Liberia was once known as the West African hub for medicine and research.
The UCL says while the focus is on education, it is time to revisit Liberia’s medical sector and to help strengthen medical tourism in West Africa.
NPHIL Director General, Tolbert Nyenswah will be joined by presidents from some universities in Liberia who will unite with presidents from universities in the U.S. with a view to focusing on global health and education.
The Third Annual United for Liberia Fundraising series of the University Consortium for Liberia (UCL) will host Dr. Ophelia Weeks – President of the University of Liberia (UL); Dr. Joseph Isaac, President – African Methodist Episcopal University and also President of the Association of Liberian Universities; Dr. Emmet Dennis, President Emeritus, University of Liberia; Dr. Cheryl Dozier, Savannah State University – President and other institutional partners at Morehouse School of Medicine.
The UCL aims at providing a wonderful opportunity for Liberian students to come to America to further their studies and for U.S. students and faculty to visit Liberia on Study Abroad – Service Learning and Faculty Exchanges.
The UCL and UL are great partners helping to bring brighter futures through education and understanding. According to Dr. Weeks of the UL, The gala will help raise funds in support of these efforts.
Over the years, UCL has sent students and faculty from Tuskegee University, Savanah State University, Clark Atlanta University, Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia, Emory University and other U.S.-based institutions to Liberia for academic exchanges. The organization has also brought students from UL to the U.S. for integrated learning experiences.
UCL will award five students studying in the U.S. with scholarships.
