Monrovia – The Liberia Muslim Women Network in collaboration with other Muslim organizations have joined the world over in celebrating the World Hijab Day from across six counties, including Montserrado, Bassa, Bomi and Grand Cape Mount, Bong and Maryland Counties.
The celebration of the event which started from the 28th January 2018, and will end on February 2, 2018, with an indoor occasion on February 1, 2018; which was the main celebrated with a parade from the intersection of Clay and Benson Streets to Ducor.
Speaking during the occasion, the head of the organizing team, Makoma Donzo, noted that the indoor program will be held on February 2, 2018 at the TM Mall on in Monrovia from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
She said this year’s Global Theme: is titled: “Strong in Hijab” while the National Theme is titled: “Strong with Hijab,” thus demonstrating the strength of women wearing the veil.
Donzo also stressed that the indoor program will focus on discussion among women on how to take good care of themselves with their Hijab and their environment; stressing that there will be drama demonstration on wearing Hijab, video break and show demonstrating the dress code of professional women wearing the veil, such as the police, army, and nurse and among others.
“We are women and our Hijab is our pride and our way of life, we used this day to celebrate ourselves as women in Hijab and making others feel the life of us wearing the veil,” she maintained.
However, the Hijab, apart from it been obligatory, it is visible way of women in the Hijab identifying with each other as women within the Islamic religion and a symbol of personal space between women and their male counterparts.
According to scholars, the Hijab reserved the dignity of women in the religion, reduce insecurity from men and many others, the World Hijab Day is also used to showcase the freedom and traditional aspect of veil to those participating countries.
The day is an annual event celebrated February 1st of each year and is celebrated in 140 countries worldwide; this day was first celebrated in 2013 and was founded by Nazma Khan from New York.
The purpose of this day is to encourage women of all religions and background to wear and experience the life of Hijabees and also give non Hijabee and non Muslim women the opportunity to experience Hijab wearing.
It is believed that some people misinterpret the Hijab in some countries as a method of oppression, believing that women are forced to wear the Hijab and live the tradition and those believed has led to the ill-treatment of women wearing veil in some countries in the world that has taken away their voices and added their sufferings.
Therefore the day is also in recognition of those millions of women across the world that chose to wear the Hijab and live a life of modesty.
Meanwhile, Islamic is a holistic way of life and the dress code is part of the religion; the way Muslims dress is what makes them a Muslims.
