Monrovia – The Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC) will hold elections for a new leadership this weekend. Philibert Brown, the longest-serving president of the LNOC, has confirmed he will not seek re-election.
However, Brown has pledged his full support to his long-time Vice President, Cllr. Sylvester Rennie, who is vying for the presidency of the local Olympic body.
Meanwhile, Liberia Athletics Federation President Mulbah Zaza has also declared his intention to run for the LNOC presidency. However, Zaza has not received backing from Brown or his allies. Brown had previously supported another Vice President, Malcolm Joseph, for the position. Reports indicate that Joseph was advised to abandon his presidential bid after Cllr. Rennie expressed his interest.
The LNOC elective congress is set to take place this Saturday at Cain’s Lodge on the Marshall Road.
However, some stakeholders within the LNOC are voicing concerns about the congress, citing constitutional issues. They claim that the current LNOC constitution violates regulations set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These dissatisfied stakeholders have threatened to seek legal action to prevent the elections from proceeding until the constitutional matters are addressed.
