Monrovia – The newly appointed head coach of Monrovia College (MC) High School’s basketball team, Andrew A. Kallon, is urging athletes on the school’s basketball squad to take their training seriously as part of their preparation for the upcoming Inter-School Sports Association (ISSA) league basketball competition.
Coach Kallon, a former captain of the MC basketball team, explained that he was asked by the school’s alumni to take over the team and help better prepare the athletes for the 2024/2025 ISSA league. He emphasized the importance of dedication in training as they work to improve their skills for the competition.
“As an alumnus of MC who once served as captain of the school basketball squad, I was called by my former school and teammates to take over and help better prepare the athletes for the challenges of the 2024/2025 ISSA league and other upcoming school competitions. This is the same training they are undergoing three times a week,” Coach Kallon said.
Kallon noted that there has been noticeable improvement in the athletes’ response to the training, particularly compared to the conditions when he first took over. Initially, the team struggled with ball control and lacked basket-making skills, but over the past month, progress has been made. He encouraged the athletes to intensify their focus on training, particularly in mastering passing and shooting skills, to achieve better results against their opponents.
“I’m seeing improvement in my players, especially in their response to training. They’ve moved beyond the poor ball control and lack of skills. We’re focusing on the fundamentals of basketball because the fundamentals are the foundation of the game. I’m working hard on their fundamentals to help them gain more skills,” Coach Kallon stated.
Under Coach Kallon’s leadership, the team played an exhibition match against Sadia High School, which ended in a narrow 13-12 defeat. Despite the loss, Coach Kallon assured the athletes that more exhibition games will be scheduled as part of their preparation for the ISSA league. He also reminded them of the importance of maintaining discipline and good conduct while playing, urging them to always adhere to the rules of basketball if they wish to succeed.
Meanwhile, ISSA president G. Gar Zepu confirmed that the basketball version of the 2024/2025 ISSA league will begin on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the Sports Commission on Broad Street. Zepu called on the sports directors of the 12 schools participating in the league to collaborate closely with ISSA officials during game times, ensuring that students and players remain under control and follow the guidelines during matches.
