Monrovia – The Chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mr. Mulbah Morlu, has urged partisans of his party to stay clear of all campaign activities on Friday, June 7.
June 7 is the day selected by a group of Liberians under the banner, ‘Council of Patriots’, who have planned a protest against what they say are ills in the society and they want President George Manneh Weah to personally intervene in getting them solved. The organizers have promised to bring on the streets “tens of thousands of Liberians.”
Addressing a press conference Monday, May 27, at the party’s headquarters, Morlu said beginning Tuesday, June 4th which is the day set by the National Elections Commission (NEC) for the commencement of campaigning, the CDC will hold mini-awareness in Monrovia and its surroundings and will hold a series of community preparatory mass meetings on June 5th and 6th.
“Because the work load will be vigorous, we are calling on all partisans to stay home on the 7th of June and rest. We are calling on all partisans of the CDC to stay home to get prepare for the official launch of the CDC campaign on the 8th.
“Even at the party headquarters nothing will be happening here on the 7, except those who are residents at the CDC party headquarters. While you will be home, we urge to rest. Throughout this campaign, we admonish you to continue to exercise political tolerance and lead a peaceful campaign. This is democracy; you will be provoked but there is no basis to respond. Avoid a confrontational zone during these campaigns. They will provoke you and insult you but you are under responsibility as a ruling party to remain peaceful,” he told his partisans.
Chairman Morlu warned his fellow partisans to campaign vigorously and not to be complacent about the party’s past history of winning in Montserrrado County.
“We do not want to win by getting in confrontation with them, win by discussing the issues. Don’t be complacent; campaign as if you are the least. The fact that you are strong, suggests that you are to work the hardest.”
Few weeks ago at the CDC’s New Kru Town primaries, the party elected Ms. Pauletta Wie and Mr. Abu Kamara to represent the party in the pending Montserrado County by-elections. The two candidates were elected by delegates, who attended the primaries held in New Kru Town, a stronghold of the ruling establishment.
Mr. Abu Kamara is opting to replace fallen lawmaker Adolph Lawrence of District 15. Rep. Lawrence, who died in a tragic car accident on the Robertsfield Highway, had served for just a year in the second term at the House of Representatives.
Abu won on white ballot after his fierce contender withdrew from the race at the eleventh hours of the primaries. As a CDC candidate, he now has a challenge to face Ms. Telia Urey, who was put forth by the four collaborating opposition political parties, including the former ruling Unity Party, Liberty Party, the Alternative National Congress and the All Liberian Party, which is headed by her father, Mr. Benoni Urey.
In 2017 Kamara came close to contesting against Adolph Lawrence but was denied by the Supreme Court for failing to comply with the Code of Conduct for public officials.
The Supreme Court ruled that he was an official of government and as per the Code of Conduct, appointed officials of government wanting to contest a national elections must resign two years ahead of the elections. Kamara worked then as a deputy minister at the Ministry of Transport during former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s regime.
