Liberia: “Never Over Until It’s Over” – Bedell Backs Warriors Despite Turmoil

Monrovia – The goalless draw on Sunday between Liberian Cup champions Black Man Warriors (BMW) and Coton Sport of Benin in their CAF Confederation Cup fixture at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex has left the tie delicately balanced.

For some fans, the result was disappointing, but veteran Liberian sports journalist Wleh Bedell believes the Warriors are “still very much in it.”

“All is not lost. There is another 90 minutes of football to be played in Benin. If BMW go with the belief and desire to qualify, they can raise their game and get the result needed,” Bedell told FrontPage Africa.

Drawing Inspiration from History

Bedell recalled that Liberian clubs have previously gone to Benin and returned with qualification. In 1990, Mighty Barrolle advanced after defeating Dragons 3-0 at home and holding them to a 0-0 draw away. Nine years later, in 1999, LPRC Oilers eliminated Mogas 90 with a 1-0 home win followed by another 0-0 draw in Cotonou.

“These are moments of inspiration that BMW can look back on. Both Barrolle and Oilers returned unscathed, and BMW can do the same. They must not give up,” Bedell said.

Turmoil Within the Camp

The optimism, however, has been clouded by internal issues. Following the first leg, reports emerged of friction between club officials and head coach Samuel Chebli, who reportedly tendered a verbal resignation. Chebli is said to be frustrated over the club’s inability to secure reinforcements he had requested.

Compounding matters, some players briefly abandoned camp over unpaid per diems, prompting urgent intervention from management. Club insiders confirmed to FrontPage Africa that officials had to persuade Chebli to travel with the team while also warning players of disciplinary action if they failed to return.

In an official statement, the club denied receiving any formal resignation from the coach

“We have not received any official communication from Coach Chebli concerning his resignation and remain fully focused on the return leg of our CAF encounter,” BMW stated.

Departure for Togo

The Warriors departed Monrovia on Tuesday in two batches for Togo where the matches will be play.

The Liberian team travelled with key players and staff leading the first group. The final contingent, including remaining officials join the team on Wednesday.

Despite the turbulence, Bedell urged the players and staff to remain united.

“The captain cannot abandon the ship on the high sea. Coach Chebli must put on a thick skin, endure the criticism, and rally his team. The players must also forget about boycotting camp and think about their careers, their fans, and their country. Your reputation is at stake. It is never over until it is over,” Bedell emphasized.

A Decisive 90 Minutes Ahead
