KANWEAKEN, River Gee County – An officer of the Liberia National Police assigned to the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Sergeant Marcus Beweh, is in police custody following a shooting incident that left two civilians injured in Kanweaken, Gbeapo District, River Gee County.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 7, when Sergeant Beweh, who was en route to Maryland County, made a brief stop in Kanweaken. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the vehicle accompanying the sergeant parked in an area designated by county police as a motorcycle-only parking zone.
Local motorcyclists reportedly attempted to explain the restriction, but Sergeant Beweh allegedly insisted that the vehicle remain there, leading to a heated argument. Witnesses said tensions escalated after the sergeant briefly left the scene for a nearby entertainment center and later returned in a more aggressive manner.
Upon his return, Sergeant Beweh reportedly renewed his demand to park in the restricted area, while the motorcyclists maintained that doing so would violate police instructions. During the confrontation, the sergeant allegedly slapped one of the motorcyclists, triggering public disorder.
In an attempt to assert control, Sergeant Beweh allegedly discharged his firearm several times—first into the air and then into the ground. One of the bullets struck Sam Sannoh in the thigh. Sannoh was reportedly trying to calm the situation when he was hit. Another individual, Sampson Weah, was also involved in the incident.
Both men were rushed to Fish Town Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Representative Alexander Pour of Electoral District #1 has reportedly assumed responsibility for their medical bills after being informed of the incident by his district coordinator, Robert S. K. Weah, who also helped facilitate their transport to the hospital by ambulance.
Confirming the incident, Assistant Commander of Police (ACP) Theophilus Toe Togba said Sergeant Beweh has been arrested and is undergoing investigation. ACP Togba expressed regret over the incident, extended sympathy to the victims and their families, and urged the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
He also disclosed plans to visit the hospital to assess the condition of the victims and obtain their statements as part of the probe.
The shooting adds to growing concerns over the alleged reckless discharge of firearms by security personnel since the start of 2026.
In a separate incident in Sinoe County, a group of Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) soldiers assigned to protect the Sapo National Park reportedly fired multiple rounds in a nearby village. According to Sinoe County Representative Sampson Weah, the soldiers allegedly stormed the community, desecrated traditional rites, and discharged more than 80 rounds, causing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Representative Weah has called for the immediate recall of the soldiers and a thorough investigation into the incident.
