“Legislature, Not For Money Making” – Cllr. Sherman Warns

Monrovia – The former Chairman of the Ruling Unity Party, Cllr. Varney Sherman is gaining more strength in the 2017 Presidential and Legislative campaign period as Liberia political arena gets tough, after returning from medical leave outside the country.

Sherman, who is a sitting senator for Grand Cape Mount County in Western Liberia, has taken assertion against individuals whom he said are considering using the National Legislature to gain wealth for themselves.

Cllr. Sherman said he has noticed over some time that some individuals are aiming at the Liberian Legislature as a means of creating jobs for themselves when their focus should be directed to representing the people.

“There are people in Liberia who want jobs, but the Legislature is not a place for job, it is rather a place to represent your people,” Cllr. Sherman said.

At the official campaign launch of his party’s Montserrado County District Number Five Candidate, Norris Tweah, Sherman noted that only a person who has the requisite knowledge on legislative proceedings can better represent the people.

According to him, only an educated person can be able to take on a legislative struggle, most especially those knowledgeable with the law, pointing specific fingers at Tweah.

Sherman said it would be impossible for a lawmaker to monitor, supervise and evaluate the Executive Branch in the absence of proper education.

“As Lawmaker, you are to make laws and if you are not educated, you will not be able to make good laws for your people.”

“There is no way one can represent you without being educated,” Sherman asserted.

He said an election of a qualified candidate like his partisan; Tweah would be able to put forth the requisite argument at the Capitol for the benefit of his people.

Cllr. Sherman however urged residents of the jam packed launching ceremony to join hands with Tweah in supporting the Presidential bid of Amb. Joseph Boakai comes October 10, 2017.

For his part, Norris Tweah who is popularly called by his people, “The Poor Man Lawyer” said the need to give a bright future for the children in Montserrado County District Number Five is cardinal.

Breaking the storm on a wet Wednesday and pulling a crowd aimed Tweah aimed to showcase his political strength to his contenders the position of representative in the October polls. Tweah noted that his focus is on disenchanted people, especially young people who are expressing frustration in the district.

According to him, it is unfair that the district fund would be used by its leadership to construct schools in the name of a particular individual and locate it outside the district. This, he believes is regretful, where the construction of public school and health center are important needs for inhabitants.

He further stated that it is time for residents of 72nd and other communities across the district to benefit from educational technology, while those considered disadvantaged people take advantage of secondary education.

‘It is time that you the residents of 72nd Community, Bassa Town, Kpelleh Town, Goba-Chop Market, and all parts of this district benefit from your resources. You need to take advantage of technology because we are in the technology age,” Tweah intoned.

The Unity Party Montserrado County District Number Five Candidate at the same time expressed regrets over the lack of infrastructure development and empowerment for the people of his constituency, stating his readiness over the years to represent them legally, as a clear indication of his ability to head them.

Tweah warned them against electing people who have failed them before, saying, “Don’t elect people who have failed you, if you don’t put strong people in the House of Representatives who will help the president, our district will continue to fail.”
